When I studied abroad in Rome I lived in a neighborhood called Trastevere, a rustic area across the river from the Pantheon and the Colosseum. My favorite part about the area was how it wasn't as touristy as the rest of Rome and how it was so easy to get lost within the narrow cobblestone streets and ivy-covered orange buildings. There was a cafe in one of the central piazzas of the neighborhood that served big wine glasses of arancia rossa, or blood orange juice, that my friends and I would sit for hours enjoying (maybe with a glass of wine too). I've been in love with blood oranges ever since and whenever I see them in stores here I pick some up.
I like to think of this cocktail as a mix between a mimosa and spritzer of sorts, since it uses champagne, but only a splash. What matters most is that it's light and refreshing, perfect for brunch, and has my favorite citrus flavors.
Blood Orange Spritzers
- 5 blood oranges
- 2 ruby red grapefruit
- 3 naval oranges
- Juice all the citrus and strain so the juice isn't too pulpy and has no seeds. Mix all juices together.
- In tall glasses, pour citrus juice about 2/3 of the way. Add ice and top with champagne. Garnish with orange slice and enjoy!
